The NEET 2027 Online Exam could completely change the exam-day experience that medical aspirants have known for years. Instead of sitting at a school desk with a question paper, OMR sheet and black ballpoint pen, students may eventually find themselves in front of a computer screen at a CBT centre.
For many aspirants, that immediately raises a practical question: if NEET moves from paper to computer, will their exam centre change too? The answer is not as simple as it may seem.
The Centre is working on the infrastructure needed for large-scale computer-based examinations, but several important details about NEET 2027 are still awaiting final official confirmation. So, before assuming what the new exam will look like, let’s separate what has actually been announced, what is currently being planned and what NEET aspirants still need to wait for.
NEET 2027 Online Exam: What Is Confirmed and What Is Not?Key Details
The easiest way for students to understand the current situation is to separate the announcement from the implementation details.

What’s confirmed about the NEET 2027 online exam
NEET-UG will be conducted in computer-based test (CBT) mode from 2027, replacing the traditional pen-and-paper format. Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan announced the shift on 15 May 2026, and NTA has told the Supreme Court that NEET-UG will be CBT from the 2027 session.
The decision came after the NEET-UG 2026 exam was cancelled over a paper leak. The Radhakrishnan committee had flagged the OMR-based pen-and-paper system as a vulnerability for leaks.
The timeline is moving too. NTA Director General Abhishek Singh said on 13 September that the agency would move NEET to CBT “very soon”.

Here is the honest answer: NTA has not yet published the NEET 2027 centre rules, so nobody can promise you anything. But the direction of travel tells us a lot.
1. The venue is likely to change, even if your city doesn’t.
An OMR exam can be held in any school with enough desks. A computer-based exam cannot. NTA has asked AICTE to collect details on IT infrastructure and available space in government institutions, to build testing centres for NEET-UG’s computer-based exams. The details sought include computers, connectivity, CCTV and power backup.
So the school where your cousin wrote NEET in 2024 may simply not qualify anymore.
2. Smaller private centres are unlikely to be used.
A senior NTA official said CBT centres cannot be outsourced to small private players and must be chosen on strict parameters. Expect a smaller set of better-equipped venues, often technical colleges.
3. You may not write the exam in one sitting with everyone.
Coverage indicates NTA may hold the exam in roughly 20 shifts to handle the number of candidates. That means your date and shift could differ from your friend’s, even in the same city. Scores would be normalised to offset difficulty differences across shifts. Treat the shift count as reported, not official.
4. Your city choice will probably still matter.
Until now, NEET applicants have picked exam cities in the application form. The city is shown on the city intimation slip, and the full centre address and reporting details come on the admit card. Whether the same system carries over to CBT has not been announced.
What we don’t know yet
- The exact exam date and number of shifts
- How many centres there will be, and in which cities
- Whether you will still get to choose city preferences
- Whether the centre could be in a different city from your usual one, especially for students in smaller towns
- The official information bulletin, which is expected in late 2026 or early 2027
If you see a website claiming a “final centre list” for 2027 right now, be careful. NTA has not released an official NEET 2027 centre list.

What smart aspirants are doing right now
Practise on a screen, not just on paper– The move online mostly hurts students who haven’t tried computer-based mocks; after a handful of them, the difference stops feeling scary. Reading a long physics question on a screen and doing rough work on paper is a different skill.
Use NTA’s free tool– The NTA Abhyas app replicates the CBT interface and is a reliable way to get used to the real look and feel.
Build screen stamina– Three hours and 180 questions on a monitor tire your eyes differently. Do full-length timed mocks on a computer.
Don’t panic about the syllabus– This is a change in how the exam is conducted, not in what it tests.
Keep your documents ready– Address proof, photo and ID details matter more when centre and city allotment are linked to your information. Check that they match across every document.
Follow only official sources– Bookmark neet.nta.nic.in and nta.ac.in. Everything else is commentary.

The bottom line
The NEET 2027 Online Exam could change more than just the way students answer questions. If the exam moves from OMR sheets to computer-based testing, the type of venue may change too, while the exact centre or even city will depend on the final NTA rules and availability of suitable CBT centres.
For now, there is no reason for aspirants to panic or start making travel and accommodation plans based on assumptions. Keep your preparation on track, gradually get comfortable with computer-based mock tests, and wait for the official NEET UG 2027 bulletin for confirmed centre-allocation details.
The moment NTA releases the official centre rules and other CBT instructions, this article will be updated with the latest information so aspirants can plan their exam day with greater clarity.
