Official short notice:

UPESSC Principal Eligibility

Mandatory educational qualifications

  1. A postgraduate degree with at least 50% marks from a recognised university, deemed university or institution in India.
  2. A B.Ed degree from a course recognised by the NCTE.
  3. Either of the following:
    • At least four years of teaching experience as Lecturer or Assistant Teacher in classes 9–12 of an institution recognised by the Central or State Government, or
    • At least four years of experience as Headmaster in a high school, certified by a competent authority.

Explanatory note: “Competent authority” means a certificate issued by the district-level officer and countersigned by the divisional officer. For central schools, it means the regional officer.

Age limit

  • Minimum age: 30 years as on 1 July 2026.
  • Maximum: the notice sets the post’s superannuation age at 62 years. Applications are not accepted if a candidate is over 62 on 1 July 2026 or leaves the date of birth blank.
  • Only the date of birth on the High School or equivalent certificate is valid.

Application Fee and Salary

The fee is ₹2,000 for all three categories listed in the notice: General/OBC/Economically Weaker Section, SC/ST, and Divyang candidates.

Fees can be paid by credit card, debit card or net banking. The fee is not refunded and cannot be adjusted against another application.

The UPESSC Principal Salary is fixed at Level-12, ₹78,800 to ₹2,09,200. The notice does not specify allowances, so none are assumed here.

UPESSC Principal Exam Pattern and Selection Process

The final merit list is based on 400 marks: a 360-mark written exam and a 40-mark interview.

FeatureDetail
Questions120 multiple-choice questions
Marks for written exam360 (3 marks per correct answer)
Negative marking1 mark deducted for each wrong or multiple answer
Duration2 hours
MediumHindi and English (except language subjects)
Interview40 marks

If candidates tie, the commission considers written-exam marks first, then interview marks, then the postgraduate percentage, then B.Ed marks. If these are also equal, the older candidate is ranked higher. The written-exam syllabus is available on the UPESSC website.

How to Apply Online

The notice says applications are accepted only through the commission’s OTR-based online system. Offline or other forms are not accepted.

  1. Read the detailed notification and confirm you meet every eligibility condition.
  2. Complete the mandatory One Time Registration (OTR) on the official website.
  3. Open the application for this advertisement and fill it in English.
  4. Upload your photograph and signature (JPG/JPEG, 10–100 KB each) and your documents (PDF, 20–200 KB).
  5. Pay the ₹2,000 fee online and keep the receipt.
  6. Submit the form, and use the correction window if you spot a mistake.

The commission publishes a User Manual and tutorial videos on its website. The notice also lists a technical helpline (08448573939, Monday–Saturday, 9:30 AM–6:00 PM) and an email address (Support@upessc.org).

Documents and Preparation Checklist

Required by the notice (for the interview stage):

  • Two self-attested sets of your printed online application
  • High School, Intermediate, graduation and postgraduate marksheets and certificates
  • B.Ed marksheet and degree
  • Experience certificate in the prescribed format
  • No-objection certificate from your current employer
  • Character certificates and the affidavit in the prescribed format
  • Disability certificate, if applicable

General advice (not an official requirement): Keep three printed copies of your submitted form, and scan documents to the size limits before you start.

Important Advice for Candidates

Read the full notification, not just summaries. Then check the school-wise list, confirm whether you apply under the boys’ or girls’ category, and verify your experience certificate matches the format. The commission says it does not separately advise candidates on eligibility, and it can cancel candidature if information is found to be wrong.

Once you submit the form, details such as category, date of birth and gender cannot be changed. If you submit more than one application, only the last one counts.

For context on earlier hiring, see our report on the UP teacher appointment 2026 update, where 319 principals were among 3,567 selected candidates. That was a distribution of appointment letters, not a new vacancy announcement.
